Roberto BENAVENTE Rear-Admiral
President of the Chilean Section A.I.C.H.
In Homage to Captain Anatole DE MULDER.
The President of the French-Belgian Section of the
A.I.C.H., Captain Anatole DE MULDER died in Belgium on the 18th of March 1999 after a long
illness without leaving any descendants. His remains were buried on the 24th of March in
the city of Gante, where he normally lived.
Captain DE MULDER visited Chile on two
opportunities. In 1992 he attended the inauguration of the CAPE HORN Memorial - erected on
the island of the same name under an initiative of the Chilean Brotherhood - and later at
the World Congress of the A.I.C.H. held in Valparaíso in 1995.
His experiences of the
Congress and later trip to the channels of Chiloé and the San Rafael glacier were
minutely detailed in an article that he wrote in LE COURRIER DU CAP, a periodic
publication edited by the French-Belgian Section of AMICALE, in which Captain DE MULDER
did not scrimp on words to highlight attentions he had received and the natural beauties
of our country.
He was a great admirer of Chile, always emphasising
the initiatives, push and results of our Brotherhood, principally in the construction of
the lighthouse and the monuments that the Chilean Section have put up on Isla de Hornos.
Captain DE MULDER rounded Cape Horn under sail on
board the "L'AVENIR". He later belonged to the governing body of an important
Shipping Agency in Belgium. He was an excellent President of the French-Belgian
Sect
The Chilean Section of the A.I.C.H. renders a
sincere homage to a great sailor and excellent comrade expressing its sorrow for this sad
loss, condolences that it is opportune to send to his family and counterparts in the
French-Belgian Section of AMICALE.
